  • Yesterday’s guest speaker, Frank McKenna and the two honourees, Gerry Pond and J.K. Irving, all the discussed the importance of aiming higher for our education system, equal opportunity for our children and the role of an accomplished teacher. As we all know, systematic change is difficult and Gerry Pond rightly made a call for giant Silo Crushers.

I would humbly offer the ELF program (www.elfnb.com) is such an horizontal initiative. We are a turn-key children tutoring solution for organizations wishing to donate their time to assist with the biggest issue facing our children and NB Society overall: Literacy. We are looking for volunteers and local champions who will assist us, and your local school principals, in delivering one-on-one tutoring. Our program works, data shows overall gain in reading levels and we are currently in 46 schools and adding more every schools term. Help turn our hundreds of ELF tutors into a collective Giant Silo Crushers and move our adult literacy levels out of the abyss.
