My NB 150 is by, for and about young people in New Brunswick and how they want to make their communities better.
Who is it for?
All middle and high school students in New Brunswick, their teachers and their parents.
What is it?
A new initiative that combines the buzz of live events with the curiosity of solutions and data journalism to showcase the achievements of students, to amplify student voices and to support student-led ideas. It runs for the duration of the 2017/18 school year.
There are four elements to My NB 150
My NB 150 Student Showcase – October 26, 2017 at Harbour Station in Saint John, N.B.
This event will feature:
- Students on stage telling their stories about how they are effecting positive change in their communities and in their own lives.
- An interactive showcase of New Brunswick entrepreneurial, non-profit, educational and private sector organizations that want to connect with young New Brunswick to support their efforts to drive change in their communities via special projects and/or career paths.
- Special guests Candy Palmater and Radio Radio to inspire our audience to become active citizens in shaping their future and the future of their province.
Critical Thinking and Storytelling Workshops in Schools
The My NB 150 team will visit schools and classrooms to work with students to teach them how to apply critical thinking skills to specific issues and then how to reframe the issue to connect with an audience as they tell their story.
My NB 150 Student Leaders Day – November 2017 in Fredericton, N.B.
A special conversation between 150 pre-selected high school and post-secondary student leaders and New Brunswick political leaders about the future of the province and the role they want to play in making our communities better.
My NB 150 Community Conversation
Hosted by Wicked Ideas (wickedideas.ca), this is where we will explore the issues that are important to young New Brunswickers in the following three ways.
- By young people
- Stories written by young journalists along with student-generated content.
- For young people
- Stories about issues important to young people.
- We’ll reframe New Brunswick’s big issues for a youth audience to create content that can support teachers’ in the classroom.
- About young people
- Stories about young people, both their successes and challenges.
- Stories for parents to help them support their children to be successful in New Brunswick.
Why?
Because right now New Brunswick has one very big problem: its young people do not believe they have a future here in New Brunswick – and neither do an increasing number their parents. The province’s working age population is decreasing and New Brunswick is at risk of being left behind in the race to adapt to the world’s current pace of change.
Let’s admit it, this has a lot of us worried and a little bit angry. We can all feel the tension in our communities because it surrounds us – on our devices and in our conversations with colleagues, customers, friends and family. It is all-encompassing and we feel powerless to stop it.
But we have to. And together we can lead this change, with a little wicked thinking.
How to get involved
Schools
My NB 150 is free for schools to participate.
Parents and Community Volunteers
We’re looking for volunteers to help on Oct. 26 at Harbour Station in Saint John.
Non-profits
Join us on October 26 at Harbour Station with an information booth to connect directly with students interested in learning more about how what you do and how they can get involved in your organization’s work.
Private Sector
There are three ways for the private sector to support My NB 150
- Booth at Student Showcase – An opportunity to connect directly with students from across New Brunswick to inform them about what you do and possible career and/or educational paths you offer that will help young people build their future in New Brunswick.
- Local School Sponsor – Support your local school’s participation on October 26 by helping to offset transportation and/or accommodation costs.
- My NB 150 Program Partner – Work with the My NB 150 team during the 2017/18 school year to connect directly with young people to help students understand what educational and career options are available in New Brunswick that will enable them to drive change in their communities and work on the issues that matter to them.
My NB 150 is a signature Canada 150 NB initiative.
